Helle Brand, PA
Helle Brand initially graduated from Ithaca College and began her work career as a Physical Therapist, working with the elderly, the cognitively and the developmentally challenged populations. In order to further develop her interests and ability to work in the medical field, she enrolled in the Physician Assistant program at Le Moyne College, where she quickly identified geriatrics as her primary interest and was fortunate to have incredible mentors in the field. In her initial employment after graduating, she worked in nursing home settings. Her love of those with dementia was strong, and she subsequently specialized in dementia related care by working in memory disorders clinics. She has by extension been involved with community outreach and education, conferences, support groups, and research during her career. She is passionate about her work as a dementia specialist and works to promote quality of life for those with dementia, to support families in their understanding of dementia and its associated issues; and to identify strategies to best engage with someone with dementia. In helping families gain support for their loved one from home care agencies, or guiding transitions of their family member into Assisted Living Facilities and Memory Care units, Helle found an additional need to enhance the quality of care provided by agencies and residential facilities by providing trainings on dementia to their staff, having retired from clinical work.
